It’s a fact that gardens are getting smaller; existing ones aren’t shrinking, but any new developments are likely to be markedly smaller than their predecessors. In many cities you’re lucky to have much more than a balcony or postage stamp backyard, which on the face of it offer little or no encouragement to a gardener. Perhaps not much opportunity for large scale cultivation but don’t despair, there are quite a few greenhouses available that may be small in stature but are full of horticultural opportunity.
B&Q Glass Wall Garden Greenhouse
At B&Q there’s a 6ft x 2ft Wall Garden made from aluminium with clip-in toughened glazing. Access is gained through a single sliding door and this attractive structure comes with guttering and a roof vent to control temperature. With several shelves and located against a wall in a light position, this is a greenhouse that can be filled with a surprising number of plants and used to raise all your seedlings until they are ready to plant out.
Simplicity Sandon Greenhouse
Over at Tesco there is a more traditional greenhouse, aluminium with horticultural glazing, which is one of the tiniest available at 4ft x 2ft. As they say, it’s ideal when space is at a premium. Braced for strength, rigid, and easy to assemble, this Simplicity greenhouse has some unique features including a foam cushion glazing seal to combat wind damage.
Gard Man 4 Tier Grow Arc
At the economy end of the market Amazon sell the Grow It Extra Wide Grow Arc. Instead of glazing this has a heavy duty reinforced polyethylene cover and is only 1ft 6ins deep. The space saving design based around a powder coated steel frame is extremely simple to set up with no tools required. There’s a zipped roll up door and inside you have four wide shelves that can be removed to suit whatever you’re growing.
Victorian Tall Wall Greenhouse
Homebase have a very attractive Victorian Tall Wall Greenhouse that looks marvellous either with natural timber or when the tongue and groove softwood is painted. The shelves are adjustable to accommodate tall plants and access is easy through double doors into a very light environment glazed with styrene.
Swallow are well known for their greenhouses made from ThermoWood, heat treated Scandinavian timber that won’t rot or warp. GardenSite stock their impressive range, including the smallest Finch Lean To that measures 6ft x 4ft. This great little greenhouse boasts the type of market leading specifications you expect in freestanding models with an automatic vent, silicone sealed glazing and staging as standard. For larger spaces there are three longer versions at the same width.
These are all remarkably practical greenhouses for the most restricted locations, promoting an enviably productive growing environment in any compact space.
